Among the Cannes winners and Oscar hopefuls scheduled to screen at the 46th Chicago International Film Festival is The Defiled, a locally grown, black and white horror film. It’s not quite a foreign affair, but the movie covers some uncharted ground in the genre of horror: After a virus transforms people into zombie-like flesh eaters, one infected man must make sure his newborn son doesn’t end up as someone’s breakfast.

Most film critics and attendees at an international film festival are probably more interested in movies with subtitles than those pictures made for midnight screenings.
