Free the Music is a guide to new albums, EPs and songs that are available for free online. Today’s drop is: Everyone Everywhere – A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around.
I first heard of Philadelphia’s Everyone Everywhere close to a year ago, when Fistfight At The Arthouse featured a write up of their EP, A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around. I was immediately struck by the band’s sound, a solid mix of mid-90s, second-wave emo instrumental dynamics with all the heart of emo at its best and none of the fluff n’ stuff associated with the genre at its worst today. The group is one of a handful of acts across the country that are reviving the sound and spirit of emo in its mid-90s state (and earlier), and the music being made by these bands is simply irresistible. And A Lot Of Weird People… is an excellent example of the movement.
I didn’t pick up the EP immediately. Things come up. A lack of funds, plenty of other distractions… you can come up with any number of excuses for missing great pop music. And this is great pop music. Eventually, the EP went out of print and it seemed like all was lost. But, good things come to those who wait, and thanks to If You Make It, A Lot Of Weird People… is now available for free.
Clocking in at just under 11 minutes, the four tracks that fill A Lot Of Weird People… are simply great. It’s sugar-coated, pump-up pop-punk at its finest. The one problem? It’s way too short. After “We’re Going Home” comes to a close, you’ll be wanting more. More poppy hooks, more sincere and intimately-delivered lyrics, more feel-good emo.
Fortunately, Everyone Everywhere is readying their self-titled LP for a May release. Check out their MySpace page to hear a couple of songs off the new album. And, just like A Lot Of Weird People…, the new songs are fantastic.
